From dreaming to planning - we are going on a world trip!
Dreaming about traveling. Sometimes it feels like I was born that way. It must have been during my studies in Amsterdam, that my interest for seeing more of the world started getting more serious. During that period I spent a year in Berlin and another year in Barcelona and I truly loved getting to know new countries, new languages, new cultures, new people and new ways of living. That also was the time people around me started to make longer travels. Something that I always encouraged and admired, but also something that didn’t seem to be possible for me. Not enough money, not the right time. I just found a great job in Berlin, something that I was extremely looking forward to. From Amsterdam I moved back to my favourite city of Berlin, started a full-time job, fell in love with Kai, we moved together, we married. Suddenly you are in your 30’s and you realize that the cliche is true: time is going so fast. We also realized that we share a dream and if this is not the right time to make a plan out of it, will it ever be?
Let’s make a plan our of this dream
So why are we doing this? I am very happy in Berlin, with my job, marriage, friends, health, home and general life here. There is nothing more that I can wish for. I should be really grateful for what I have and what I have achieved and I am. Still, we are dreaming about how cool it must be to spend our time doing what we love the most. Getting to know new places, photographing, spending time together. Long time traveling is one of those things that I feel we will regret, if we don’t go for it. And if we don’t do it now, when will we? It is never the right time and now we are in the luxury position to be able to do it. So probably, this is the right time.
Let’s see the world
Ever since we met each other, we are spending our free time exploring new places. Sometimes nearby (Müritz, Spreewald, Sächsische Schweiz or new places in Berlin), sometimes within Europe (Andalusia, Sicily, Portugal), sometimes further away (Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico, Cuba, Hawaii). New places give us inspiration, excitement and a new viewing point on the world, it is something that we just really enjoy and we want to do more of.

Let’s go slow
We want to see more, but at the same time we want to take it slower than we usually do. We never got to spend enough time to really get to know a new place. In two weeks of holidays or a weekend trip, I want to see as much as possible. Yes, I’ll admit, I have a fear of missing out. I just don’t want to get home, realizing that I’ve just missed out on some highlights or the most photogenic spots. During my 9 years in Berlin I’ve learned that you can never discover and learn everything about a new place but during our long time travel, I want to at least be able to spend more time at one place, trying to absorb local life more, rather than just trying to see and do as much as possible in the most efficient way.
Let’s pause life for a bit
Even though we very much love our lifes, it also feels like it is just happening without having a grip on it. Are we really living our lifes or are we lived by our agendas? Weeks are going by within what feels like a blink of an eye. I want to start a new week without knowing what we are going to do, I want to spend more time reading, writing and just being in the moment.
Let’s learn new things
Having more time and spending more time at one place, will hopefully allow us to learn new things. I am thinking about taking surfing, language and cooking courses but who knows, what will cross our paths.
Let’s go minimal
The idea of living minimal has already changed our lifes quite a bit. Since our idea to go traveling got more serious (about a year ago now), we started to live lighter. We started sorting out our kitchen, our closets, our basement. We sold technical equipment, we brought clothes to second hand stores and we put smaller unused items (cups, notebooks, flower pots, etc. etc.) on the street (in Berlin-Friedrichshain it never takes longer than a few hours, until the items are gone). It feels so good to make others happy with stuff we don’t use anymore and feels even better to have more space. I am really looking forward to bring living minimal to the next level on our travel. No more wasted time on finding the right things or thinking about what to wear. I can’t wait!
Let’s spend more time together
No more planning for date nights, we will be able to really see each other every day and go on this adventure together.
Let’s go!
If others make the decision to follow their dreams to go traveling, it always seems to be easy. For me, it wasn’t easy. It feels like a risk to leave your job and a good life, to not invest your money in real estate but in traveling. But it also feels like this is the right thing for us to do and I really can’t wait until our adventure starts in January 2020!
